Council Structure
A Boy Scout Council is a
geographic division of the national Boy Scouting structure. Nationally the Boy
Scouts of America is divided into more than 300 councils. Councils vary in
geographic size and number of people they serve. The Illowa Council, is the council
that serves youth in greater Quad City Area. The Illowa council covers
approximately 6320 square miles in Iowa and Illinois and serves a population of
approximately 607,000 people.
Councils are further
subdivided into districts. The Illowa Council has 6 Districts within its
borders. The divisions are as follows:
- Hoover District - Muscatine and Cedar Counties in Iowa.
- Kittan District - Scott County in Iowa.
- Medicine Lodge District - McDonough & Warren Counties in Illinois.
- Mesquakie District - Clinton and Jackson Counties in Iowa.
- Saukenuk District - Rock Island, Mercer, & Henry Counties in Illinois.
- Sha-Bo-Na District - Knox, Stark, Bureau, and Henry Counties in Illinois.
The district boundaries are illustrated graphically as follows:
Just as the council is subdivided into districts so is its staff. Therefore, there
are 6 members of the council staff which are in charge of all the aspects of
each of the 6 districts operation. This staff position is called a District
Executive or "DE" short.
