On the Hennepin: A day of discovery. - In November of 1907, the canal boat Marion completed the first voyage of the full length of the Hennepin Canal. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of that event, and to promote recognition of this valuable resource, the Friends of the Hennepin Canal is conducting a special celebration on Oct. 7, 2007. The event is called “On the Hennepin: A Day of Discovery.”

This all-day activity will include a fishing derby for youngsters, a raffle, presentations by historical societies, a book signing by the author of a newly released work about the canal’s construction, rides in the 25-passenger Montreal canoe, a 100 k. bicycle ride, self guided tours, live music played on raditional instruments, a wiener roast, free ice cream and cake, and a dramatic presentation performed on a stage that is floating in the lagoon.

All this will take place at the Visitor Center for the Hennepin Canal Park, located on Rt. 40, one mile south of Interstate 80 near Sheffield. The bicycle ride begins at 8:00 a.m., and the other events will begin about 11:00 and continue until about 5:00 p.m. The Friends of the Hennepin is a very small organization of volunteers. We could use some help to make this a successful day. If some Boy Scouts could lend us a hand, we would ask them to be present to give directions, assist elderly and perhaps handicapped, scoop ice cream, assist in set up,etc. We will have an experienced youth worker (former teacher and scout leader) to direct the Scout volunteers, if we can get them.

Of course, hot dogs, chips, soda, ice cream and cake will be readily available to our Scouting friends.

    For more information see http://fhcanal.home.mchsi.com

Or contact Gary Wagle, President Friends of the Hennepin Canal 309-786-6681

    Scouting for food.
Your community needs you and your scouting unit on March 25th, 2006!

Be sure to have your scouts do a much needed community project. If you can’t collect on the assigned date that’s OK as any day is better than no day! Just give Ben Rogers or Mark Schaecher a call (this means we won’t have to call you) with your pack or troops plans to contribute towards the goal of filling the food pantries of our community.
